A.2014.002 1

1961

Label: care instructions but no manufacturer’s name. Manufacturer’s contract number DA-38-243-QM(GTM) 16235-G-61. Written on label and on back of waistline hem in white: R. H. Hammond and service number. Rank on left arm: yeoman, seaman.

Provenance: USA, unknown

A.2014.002

Dark blue wool, white braid and white embroidery on badges. Badges machine-embroidered squares of dark blue wool. Seaman’s badge machine-sewn to sleeve, yeoman’s badge crudely hand-sewn. Two dark plastic buttons with anchor on each sleeve. Printed cotton label underneath collar on upper back. Outer slash pocket on left breast, inner concealed pocket with single button flap on right.

Although this jumper bears a yeoman badge, the owner was not technically a yeoman, but a ‘striker’, a serviceman working his way to the full rank of yeoman. The lack of a ship’s name on the shoulder (and the lack of needle holes showing one had once been sewn there) suggests that the wearer never went to sea.

Inside out. Many of the creases seen are from the original laundering process. They were pressed while the jumper was inside out.
